Irvine : 2 Marines Killed in Collision Identified
Police identified the two Marines killed in a head-on motorcycle collision Friday night as James W. Mays Jr., 24, from Toledo, Ohio, and Edward Brian Ransom, 25, from Eagle, Idaho.
The accident occurred when one vehicle traveling eastbound on Irvine Boulevard near Sand Canyon Road at an “extremely high rate of speed” went off the roadway, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Craig Thetford. The driver, attempting to regain control of the motorcycle, spun across the center line and struck the second motorcycle head-on.
Both men, who were pronounced dead at the scene, had been stationed at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. A motorist whose car ran over a motorcycle tire that had spun into the road was not injured, Thetford said.
