Laguna School Recall

The recent Laguna Beach school board decision to allow the football coach to return as a volunteer was premature and perceived by the community as incorrect, but some positive consequences may emanate from related board actions. We can work together to ensure that policy now being formulated and related to this issue satisfies the interests of all the community.

The issue does not warrant a recall of the board, however. The members have moved quickly to deal with concerns of all of us by hiring outstanding administrators, disposing of surplus property, developing a long-term plan for quality education, and seeking funds to upgrade facilities. In this time of transition, there is need for perspective and patience.

A recall will be divisive and counterproductive. Within 11 months, we can officially elect board members, and a recall election during the interim would be disruptive. The recall proponents should instead turn their energies toward constructive deeds, help in building our schools and bring unity to our community.
