Rob Boyd, an unheralded 20-year-old downhiller, scored his first-ever World Cup ski victory Saturday at Val Gardena, Italy, to cap a triumphant day for the Canadian team.

Boyd, a second-group starter, upset the elite of Alpine skiing in the fourth men’s downhill race of the season, one hour after another Canadian, Laurie Graham, took a women’s World Cup downhill in Val d’Isere, France.

“It’s a great day for Canada,” said Boyd after clocking a winning time of 2 minutes 1.76 seconds down the icy, 2.25-mile Saslong track.

Michael Mair of Italy was second, and Markus Wasmeier of West Germany third.

Wasmeier narrowed to eight points the gap in the overall World Cup standings between him and Swiss leader Pirmin Zurbriggen.
