College Basketball Roundup : Tennessee Women Stop Texas Win Streak at 40 Games, 85-78

Third-ranked Tennessee sank seven of eight free throws in the final minute Sunday to defeat No. 1-ranked Texas, 85-78, at Austin, Tex., ending the 40-game winning streak of the defending NCAA women’s champions.

Forward Bridgette Gordon scored 26 points for Tennessee (5-0). Clarissa Davis scored a game-high 32 points for the Lady Longhorns (6-1).

Texas was unable to overcome its worst free-throw shooting of the season. The Longhorns missed four of their last six foul shots in the final 3:22.

Gordon also led Tennessee’s defense, making 6 of the team’s 17 steals. Texas, known for its pressing defense, made just 2 steals while committing 27 turnovers.

Gordon also led the Volunteers with nine rebounds.

Sheila Frost added 16 points for Tennessee, hitting 8 of 11 shots from the field.

Doreatha Conwell scored 18 points for Texas. Guards Yulonda Wimbish and Beverly Williams added 11 points each.

Sunday’s highlights in men’s basketball:

Clemson 71, South Carolina 65--Guards Michael Tait and Tim Kincaid hit two free throws each in the final minute as the Tigers (5-0) held off the Gamecocks (3-3) at Columbia, S.C.

Clemson led by as many as 16 points before the Gamecocks outscored the Tigers, 21-8, over the last seven minutes.

Jerry Pryor led Clemson with 13 points. South Carolina was led by forward Terry Dozier, who had 29 points and 10 rebounds, both career highs.

Boston College 71, Holy Cross 62--Sophomore guard Dana Barros scored 27 points, including five three-pointers, as the Eagles (6-1) downed the Crusaders (1-4) at Worcester, Mass.

Sophomore forward Glenn Tropf had a career-high 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Holy Cross.

Texas A&M; 66, Nebraska 64--Winston Crite had 20 points for the Aggies, who scored their last 10 points at the free-throw line to turn back the Huskers at College Station, Tex.

Todd Holloway scored 12 points, and John Trezvant had 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Aggies (4-1).

Anthony Bailous and Brian Carr scored 17 points each for the Huskers (2-3).

James Madison 71, Old Dominion 69--The Dukes survived despite missing the front end of five one-and-one opportunities in the final 1:44 at Harrisonburg, Va.

Sophomore Benny Gordon scored a career-high 22 points, and Kennard Winchester added 18 for the Dukes (4-1).

Freshman forward Anthony Carver had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Monarchs (2-2).

LSU 52, Georgia Tech--Anthony Wilson scored 19 points as the Tigers (3-1) turned back the 16th-rated Yellow Jackets (3-2) at Baton Rouge, La.

Nikita Wilson, declared academically ineligible last January, returned to the LSU lineup and scored six points.

Bruce Dalrymple led Georgia Tech with 21 points. Duane Ferrell, who had been averaging 23.6 points per game, was held to 6 points.

Memphis State 82, Georgia 71--Marvin Alexander scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half as the Tigers (5-3) built a 19-point lead in beating the Bulldogs (4-2) in the Cotton States tournament at Atlanta.

Vincent Askew and Sylvester Gray added 15 points apiece for the Tigers, who shot 65% from the floor.

Georgia got 18 points from Chad Kessler and 16 from Toney Mack.

Hawaii 63, Indiana State 61--Senior guard Jerald Wright hit a 15-foot jumper with 21 seconds left to give the Rainbows the title in the Early Season Tournament at Honolulu Saturday night.

Santa Clara defeated Fresno State, 63-56, in overtime to win the consolation title.
