SportsScope : Three Santa Monica Gridders Honored

Santa Monica College football players Demetrius (Pee Wee) Smith, Ken Williams and Eric Richardson were named to the All-Western State Conference first team.

Smith, a freshman wide receiver, tied Glen Hopkins of Hancock College for the conference lead in receptions with 42 and was first in all-purpose yardage with a 1,481 total and in kickoff returns with 479 yards.

Sophomore tailback Williams led the conference in scoring with 62 points, was third in rushing with 722 yards and fourth in all-purpose rushing with 889. Sophomore Richardson (6-3, 235) was a top defensive lineman.

Second-team selections for the Corsairs are freshman offensive lineman Dale Evans and five sophomores: cornerback Randy Johnson, defensive tackle Lance Jackson, quarterback Kevin Bray, fullback David Miller and wide receiver Randy Peterson.

Corsairs who earned honorable mention are freshman tight end Robert Irvin and five sophomores: center Bill Beteta, offensive tackle Larome Brownlee, linebacker Todd Deeds and defensive backs Ken Quash and Jimmy Marshall.

The UCLA women’s basketball team, 4-1 after Monday’s 100-65 loss to seventh-ranked Cal State Long Beach, is on a road trip to the South that looks like a very bumpy road.

The Bruins will be at North Carolina, 3-1 as the week began, tonight and at top-ranked Tennessee (5-0) Saturday night. Tennessee took over the top ranking in this week’s polls after defeating previously top-ranked Texas, 85-78, last weekend.

Junior forward Dora Dome is averaging 18 points a game to lead the Bruins, and freshman Sandra Van Embricqs tops UCLA in rebounding with an average of 8.6 a game.
