College Basketball Roundup : Minnesota Surprised by Austin Peay, 73-64

Austin Peay, a 5,000-enrollment Ohio Valley Conference school at Clarksville, Tenn., played its first game ever against a Big Ten team Thursday night and came away a winner.

Lawrence Mitchell scored 18 of his game-high 26 points in the second half to lead Austin Peay over Minnesota, 73-64, at Minneapolis.

Vincent Brooks scored 15 points for Austin Peay, all on three-point shots. Brooks hit two bombs midway through the second half that gave the Governors (5-4) the lead for good.

Kelvin Smith scored 23 points to lead Minnesota (3-3).

Mitchell, who made 12 of 17 field goal attempts, and Brooks combined for Austin Peay’s first 25 points in the second half.

California 70, Central Michigan 57--Center Leonard Taylor scored 16 points to lead California to victory at Berkeley.

Forward Dave Butler added 13 points and guard Kevin Johnson had 12 for California, which improved its record to 5-2.

Guard Tommie Johnson scored 21 to lead Central Michigan (4-2).

San Jose State 75, Santa Clara 73--A basket at the buzzer by senior forward George Puou gave San Jose State a victory over Santa Clara at San Jose. Forward Reggie Owens led San Jose (3-1) with 14 points. Santa Clara is 4-3.

Auburn 89, Augusta 66--Jeff Moore, who was benched for missing practice Wednesday, scored 8 of his 10 points during a 29-9 spurt in the first half that put sixth-ranked Auburn in control as the Tigers won at Auburn, Ala.

The Tigers (6-0) were led by Frank Ford’s 17 points. Mike Jones added 16, and Chris Morris and Johnny Lynn each had 15.

Jeff Hodson had 15 points, including three three-point baskets, to lead the Jaguars (2-4).

Arkansas 98, Mississippi Valley State 79--Senior William Mills had 22 points and 15 rebounds, and Arkansas broke open a tight contest with a scoring flurry in the last seven minutes as the Razorbacks (6-1) won at Fayetteville, Ark.

Shawn Baker scored a career-high 18 points and junior center Andrew Lang added 16 for the Razorbacks.

Memphis St. 77, Tennessee St. 62--Memphis State’s Vincent Askew scored 21 points and Marvin Alexander had 18 as the Tigers survived a late rally to defeat Tennessee State at Memphis.

Memphis State (6-3) held a 65-46 lead with 7:20 remaining in the game. But Tennessee State (6-3) cut the lead 69-57 with 3:30 to go.

Cleveland St. 79, E. Michigan 76--At Ypsilanti, Mich., junior forward Hersey Strong scored 19 points and senior forward Clinton Ramsey added 18 to lead Cleveland State.

Cleveland (5-2) led, 48-42, at halftime and by 75-68 with five minutes to play. Eastern Michigan (3-6) rallied within one, 75-74, with 55 seconds remaining when senior guard Lewis Scott scored on a jump shot.

Cleveland State held the ball, and sophomore guard Ken McFadden pulled the Vikings ahead, 77-74, with 19 seconds left on a pair of free throws. Strong scored the final basket for Cleveland State.
