What is Jeffrey Allen, the executive director of the California Bicentennial Commission on the United States Constitution, doing battering at the constitutional wall separating church and state? His battering ram is his statement that “ . . . the self-evident truths that there is a creator, that the creator has revealed a system of ethics and that the creator holds us responsible for how we interact with each other most certainly should (be taught in public schools).” To me and I suspect many others none of that is true, much less self-evident. Does this come as a surprise to Jeffrey Allen? No greater surprise certainly than my stunned amazement at finding such views expressed by one in his position. How did he get that job and when will he read the document he’s been hired to commemorate?
