NBA Roundup : Ewing Scores 29 in Knicks’ Victory
Patrick Ewing scored 29 points, the sixth time he has scored 20 points or more in the last seven games, and the New York Knicks broke an eight-game losing streak with a 103-99 victory over the San Antonio Spurs Monday night at Madison Square Garden.
Ewing scored 11 points in the last 9:41 of the third period as the Knicks overcame a seven-point deficit to lead, 81-76, with 24 seconds left. Guard Jon Sundvold then scored four straight points to get the Spurs within one, but the Knicks followed with a 10-0 run for a 91-80 margin.
The Knicks missed 5 of 10 free throws down the stretch, helping San Antonio pull as close as one point, but a Ewing steal led to an easy basket by Gerald Wilkins with five seconds left, giving them a 102-97 lead.
Rookie Johnny Dawkins led San Antonio with 26 points while Alvin Robertson had 22 points, 12 assists and a court-record eight steals. Wilkins added 17 points for New York.
Utah 114, Philadelphia 111--At Philadelphia, the Jazz won their third straight game and their 10th in the last 11 and pulled into a first-place tie in the Midwest Division with idle Dallas as Bobby Hansen scored 25 points, including a basket after a steal by John Stockton with six seconds to play, at Philadelphia.
Kelly Tripucka added a season-high 22 points for Utah. Charles Barkley led the 76ers with 23 points and 21 rebounds.
