Fullerton Going After McQuarn’s 100th Win

Cal State Fullerton Coach George McQuarn had hoped his team would make it through December with enough victories to have their egos intact for January and the start of Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. play. It appears he needn’t worry.

This is some of what the Titans have accomplished in seven games this season:

--They have a six-game winning streak which is their longest since the middle of the 1983-84 season.

--They have four straight wins over teams that reached post-season tournaments last March.

--They beat Brigham Young to win the championship of the BYU Tournament.

--Their last two victories--over Pepperdine and Washington--came by 20 points each and left them with a 6-1 record.

All of this has made McQuarn’s job, which he almost chose to give up late last season, much more enjoyable.

McQuarn seeks his 100th victory at Fullerton tonight at 7:30 when the Titans play Loyola Marymount in Titan Gym. He’ll bring with him a happy group of players. “It’s easier to coach them and get them to accept their roles,” he said, “because winning is enough for everybody.”

Junior guard Richard Morton had a season-high 23 points in last Friday’s 75-55 win over Washington.

That game marked the first time a Pacific 10 conference team had played in Titan Gym. It also gave more confidence to a team that appeared to have plenty where that came from.

Said Morton: “We think we’ve got one of the toughest schedules in Fullerton’s history, and we want to go out and prove we can play with these teams. We’re feeling real good about each other.”

There would good feelings at Loyola, too, until the Lions hit the road last week to find that it occasionally hits back.

The Lions lost at Brooklyn College, 82-75, and at Loyola of Chicago, 115-93, to drop to 5-3. Junior forward Mike Yoest is averaging 23.5 points per game for Loyola.
