LSU Picks an Assistant to Replace Arnsparger
Louisiana State defensive coordinator Mike Archer, 33, became the nation’s youngest major college football coach Tuesday when the LSU Board of Supervisors tapped him to succeed the outgoing Bill Arnsparger.
Archer, who had been rejected by the board earlier this month, was a unanimous choice except for one abstention. He was recommended as Arnsparger’s successor by Chancellor James Wharton, Arnsparger and the LSU Athletic Council just a few days after Arnsparger announced his decision to leave on Nov. 29. But the Board of Supervisors--an 18-member group selected by the governor--narrowly rejected him in Dec. 5 vote.
Arnsparger is going to Florida as athletic director but will coach the Tigers against Nebraska in the Sugar Bowl.
