Santa Monica : Apartments for Mentally Ill

Share

Portals House Inc. plans to provide a new semi-supervised residential and outreach program for chronically mentally ill homeless adults with a $218,024 contract approved recently by the county Board of Supervisors.

The agency will lease 14 two-bedroom apartments in the Santa Monica area that will be rented to participants for about $550 a month, according to Supervisor Deane Dana. The agency staff will provide supervision as needed, officials said.

The average length of stay will be two years, and participants will be encouraged to start looking for their own apartments about six months before their discharge date. Referrals to federally subsidized housing and other low-cost housing will be provided, officials said.

The Santa Monica-based agency also will provide advice on apartment living, officials said. The staff will also provide referrals to resources needed by the homeless.
