An 88-year-old resident of a board and care home survived a freak accident Thursday afternoon when a car crashed into a bedroom and pinned him against a wall, Chula Vista police said.

Joe Garcia was in bed when a car driven by Mildred Pfeiffer, 83, crashed into the room, the spokeswoman said. Garcia was trapped beneath the car until Chula Vista firefighters rescued him. He suffered leg injuries and other cuts and bruises and complained of back pains.

Police said the accident occurred about 3:30 p.m. at the home in the 500 block of 2nd Avenue when Pfeiffer, who was not hurt, lost control of her car after turning into the driveway. She apparently stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake.

Garcia was taken to Chula Vista Community Hospital, where a spokeswoman said he was not seriously injured and was “doing just fine.”
