A uniformed San Fernando police sergeant wearing a shirt borrowed from a passer-by disarmed a man with a gun aboard a crowded Greyhound bus at the San Fernando bus terminal Saturday afternoon, San Fernando police said. No one was hurt.
Police were called to the terminal after two women passengers saw a man with a gun on the bus. The San Francisco-bound bus, which had 36 passengers, had just arrived from downtown Los Angeles about 2 p.m. The passengers remained calm, police said.
Fearing that the man might try to hijack the bus or take hostages, Sgt. Ernie Halcon borrowed a shirt, boarded the bus and pointed his service revolver at the man, who surrendered without resistance.
The man, Appollonio Caballero, 21, of Mexico, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a gun and of a switch-blade knife, both misdemeanor violations.
