A 15-year-old boy died Thursday after friends he was surfing with found the youth floating offshore.
Monte Quebedeaux was pulled from the water off the 800 block of Neptune Avenue in the Leucadia area by other surfers about 1:30 p.m. and then rushed by Life Flight helicopter to Scripps hospital, where he died.
Although the youth apparently drowned, his friends and coroner’s officials were unsure of what caused the incident. Deputy Coroner David Lodge said Quebedeaux, a resident of the Cardiff section of Encinitas, had a history of epilepsy and may have had an attack. An autopsy is planned.
Friends told authorities they were busy surfing and lost track of Quebedeaux for about 15 minutes before they found him floating in the water.
