Share

Police have arrested a 63-year-old woman and her daughter for allegedly practicing medicine and performing abortions at their home without a license, an investigator said Saturday.

Police investigator Jerry Zamora said Rafaela Duarte Vargas and Aurura Herlinda Vargas, 37, were arrested Friday at their home in the 200 block of South Melrose Street.

Although Zamora would not give details of the allegations against the mother and daughter, he said the arrests were the result of “an extensive investigation.”

Search warrants were served on the two women by arresting police officers and an investigator of the State Board of Medical Quality Assurance. Zamora said cash, patient records and medication were seized at the home.

The two women were booked into the Orange County Jail on charges of practicing medicine without a license and illegally inducing abortion. Bail was set at $10,000 bail each, which neither had posted by late Saturday, a jail spokesman said.
