To beat Kansas, Wichita State Coach Eddie Fogler knew his team would have to stop Danny Manning, the Jayhawks’ outstanding forward.

The Shockers (9-4) did just that Tuesday night at Wichita, Kan., limiting Manning to 12 points--10 below his average--en route to a 54-49 upset of the 19th-ranked Jayhawks (7-4).

“I thought one of the keys to our victory, if we were to win, was to control the tempo of the game,” Fogler, in his first year at Wichita State after serving as an assistant to North Carolina’s Dean Smith, said. “Obviously, by the final score, we were able to keep the game from being an up-and-down, running-type ball game which I thought would favor Kansas.”

The Shockers used a tight zone to contain the 6-foot-11 Manning, who seldom touched the ball in the second half and was scoreless over the final 11:50.

Villanova 66, Boston College 58--Harold Jensen scored 17 points, including a pair of three-point field goals late in the game, as Villanova won a Big East game at Boston.

The triumph improved the Wildcats’ record to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference. The Eagles, playing their league opener, dropped to 7-4. Kenny Wilson and Doug West each added 16 points for Villanova. Dana Barros paced the Eagles with a game-high 18 points.

Connecticut 77, Seton Hall 68--Cliff Robinson scored 19 points and Tate George added 15 at East Rutherford, N.J., to lift Connecticut to a Big East upset of Seton Hall, snapping the Pirates’ five-game winning streak.

Robinson, who fouled out with four minutes to play, scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the first half. George had 6 rebounds and 11 of his 15 points in the second half. Phil Gamble finished with 14 points for the Huskies (6-6, 1-2). Seton Hall is 9-2 and 2-1.
