College Basketball Roundup : Kentucky Is Upset by Alabama

Derrick McKey scored 25, points and Jim Farmer added 22 as Alabama snapped Kentucky’s 24-game winning streak at Rupp Arena by upsetting the ninth-ranked Wildcats, 69-55, Wednesday night in a Southeastern Conference game at Lexington, Ky.

Alabama (9-2, 3-0) went on a 12-4 spurt in the first four minutes of the second half to take a 43-35 lead, then never looked back while matching Kentucky’s biggest loss at Rupp Arena. Alabama beat Kentucky, 78-64, on Jan. 12, 1980.

Kentucky (7-3, 1-2) closed within 45-40 on Richard Madison’s basket with 13:49 left, but the Crimson Tide went on a 9-2 surge, including five points by Farmer, to open a 54-42 advantage.

Madison had 15 points for Kentucky, and Derrick Miller added 14.

Georgetown 60, St. John’s 46--Perry McDonald scored all 12 of his points in the second half as the No. 16 Hoyas manhandled the 10th-ranked Redmen in a Big East Conference game at Landover, Md.

St. John’s (9-2, 1-2) had won four straight games over the Hoyas (10-1, 2-1) at the Capital Centre dating to 1982. Willie Glass scored 16 points for St. John’s and Reggie Williams had 16 for the Hoyas.

Duke 93, St. Joseph’s 83--Marty Nessley scored 9 of his 10 points in the second half to lead a rally that pushed the 17th-ranked Blue Devils past the Hawks at Durham, N.C., for their 10th straight victory.

Quin Snyder had 17 points and 7 assists for Duke and Danny Ferry added 15 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists for Duke (11-1). Wayne Williams scored 25 points for the Hawks (6-3), and James Flint added 18 points and 7 assists.

Clemson 73, N.C. State 69--Horace Grant collected 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as the undefeated Tigers stopped the Wolf Pack in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Clemson, S.C.

Kenny Drummond, who scored 28 points for the Wolf Pack (9-3, 0-1), missed a 3-point shot with three seconds left. Jerry Pryor of Clemson (12-0, 1-0) was fouled and made 1 of 2 free throws with two seconds left.

Auburn 62, Georgia 58--Aundrae Davis broke a tie with a three-point field goal early in overtime, and the 13th-ranked Tigers got past the Bulldogs in an SEC game at Auburn.

Georgia (8-5, 1-3), playing without three of its top six players (one injured, two ineligible), forced the extra period when Milt Blakely hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer for to tie the score, 53-53. Jeff Moore scored 16 points for Auburn (8-2, 1-1).
