Texas’ Ethridge Wins Women’s Award
Kamie Ethridge of Texas was named winner of the Broderick Cup Thursday night, an award presented annually to the nation’s top female collegiate athlete.
Ethridge, a point guard, led Texas’ women’s team to a 34-0 record and the NCAA basketball championship last season, averaging 12 points and 8 assists a game. She was captain of the United States team that won gold medals at the Goodwill Games and the World Championships last summer.
“I think Texas has a different kind of program,” Ethridge said. “It doesn’t develop the star image and all of the statistics. You don’t expect an honor like this.”
Ethridge, 22, was among 10 Broderick Cup candidates who were voted the top athletes in their respective sports during the 1985-86 collegiate season. Other candidates were Suzie Tuffey, North Carolina State, cross-country; Megan Donnelly, Massachusetts, field hockey; Page Dunlap, Florida, golf; Penny Hauschild, Alabama, gymnastics; Susan Lefebvre, Cal State Fullerton, softball; Jenna Johnson, Stanford, swimming and diving; Gretchen Rush, Trinity, tennis; Juliet Cuthbert, Texas, track and field, and Kim Oden, Stanford, volleyball.
