After three businesses were evacuated, explosives experts Tuesday removed 4 1/2 pounds of dynamite from a paper sack in a car parked outside a Garden Grove liquor store.

Garden Grove Police Lt. Chuck Gibbs said a man--whom police would not identify--called at 2 p.m. to report finding a bag containing explosives next to Ed Larsen’s Liquor Store in the 13100 block of Harbor Boulevard. The caller also said he had placed the bag in his own car.

Two officers went to the scene and removed the bag from the car. Then three businesses, including the liquor store, were evacuated and two members of the Hazardous Services Unit of the Sheriff’s Department were called.

Gibbs said Harbor Boulevard was closed for 20 minutes while the dynamite was removed.

Sheriff’s Department investigator Christopher Ware, who helped remove the explosives, said the sack contained 4 1/2 pounds of dynamite, 30 feet of detonator cord and eight blasting caps.

Gibbs said the caller was not a suspect.
