Last summer, members of La Habra Hilltoppers 4-H Club won awards for championship sheep, swine, and Nubian goat at the Orange County Fair. It wasn’t unusual: With one of the most active clubs in the Orange County Region, La Habra Heights traditionally brings home top honors. This year, 73 club members expect to raise roughly 180 chickens, rabbits, sheep, goats and pigs, said 4-H Community Leader Teri Wilcut. The club has been going strong since at least the mid-1950s, Wilcut said, and four out of five current city council members have participated in 4-H as parents or advisers. Mayor Charles Wolfarth, the father of three former 4-Hers, was the keynote speaker at the Hilltoppers 1986 award ceremony. Wilcut said La Habra Heights’ unusual zoning ordinance, which requires residential lot sizes of at least an acre, contributes to the club’s success. “We couldn’t do it without the open spaces,” Wilcut said. “You just can’t raise pigs in an ordinary backyard.”
