‘Prison or Mirage’

Share

Gov. Deukmejian’s stubborn insistance on building a prison adjacent to East Los Angeles obviously means that this issue has become for him a holy war against those legislators and the Latino community residents who oppose this move.

Certainly the governor is free to pursue any course that he chooses. However, to cite fairness as the reason he favors the Eastside location is outlandish.

To even begin to suggest that East Los Angeles somehow does not carry its “fair share” ignores reality and insults people’s intelligence. I defy the governor to name a single area in the entire state of California that has more freeways, more cemeteries and more jails than East Los Angeles.

The day that fairness begins to be the basis for government decisions that affect the residents and community of East Los Angeles is a day to which I patiently look forward.
