Gov. George Deukmejian and a delegation of top state officials and California business leaders arrived in Tokyo for an eight-day trip designed to increase Japanese investment in California and open Japan’s markets to California’s exports. It was Deukmejian’s first overseas trip since his Army days in the early 1950s. “He probably went to bed too early. The whole trip could be down the tubes,” quipped spokesman Larry Thomas, noting that travelers are advised to stay up late the first night in order to adjust to the 17-hour time difference between Japan and California. Deukmejian and his wife, Gloria, plan to spend their first full day in Japan sightseeing.
