Women’s Roundup : Fullerton Defeated by Irvine

The UC Irvine women’s basketball team defeated Cal State Fullerton, 78-71, Saturday night in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game in Titan Gym.
The Anteaters led by as many as 13 points before settling for a 40-34 halftime lead. Irvine (2-2 in the PCAA and 6-8 overall) was paced by junior forward Zalina Walton’s 23 points. Sophomore center Cheryl Eiland added 17 points and 7 rebounds.
A basket and free throw by junior forward Bethel Lauder brought the Titans to within three points, 74-71, with 1:05 left, but Irvine answered with a field goal by junior guard Cheryl Hoffman on a pair of free throws from sophomore guard Kippie Brown.
Fullerton (0-4, 3-10) was led by Lauder’s 27 points.
Northern Arizona 65, Chapman 46--Tracy Barnes and Mindy Sherred each scored 14 points to lead Northern Arizona (9-5) over Chapman in the nonconference game at Flagstaff, Ariz.
Chapman (9-7) shot only 27% for the game, converting 19 of 64 field goals.
Valerie Hartsfield scored 14 points and had 4 rebounds for the Lady Panthers, and Dana Dawson added 10 points.
California Baptist 77, Southern California College 59--Shannon Patterson scored 16 points and had 14 rebounds to lead Cal-Baptist to a 77-59 victory over Southern California College at Riverside.
Cindy Clark added 14 points and 8 rebounds for the Lady Lancers (5-10).
Southern California College (7-11) was led by Delores Effinger and Lisa Touzet , who each had 15 points and 11 rebounds.
USC 66, Oregon 64--Trojan forward Cherie Nelson scored 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead USC past Oregon in a Pacific 10 Conference game in the Sports Arena.
CS Long Beach 114, Fresno State 70--The 49ers breezed to the win in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at home after shooting 59.5% (28 of 47) in the first half, and had one lead of 50 points, 111-61, with 3:17 left in the game.
Oregon State 74, UCLA 69--Guard Monica Raspberry, a junior from Morningside High School in Inglewood, scored all 15 of her points in the final 14:22 to lead the Beavers in a Pac-10 game at Pauley Pavilion and snap the Bruins’ five-game winning streak.
