Former Assemblyman Robinson Pulls Out of Crowded Field for 33rd District
Former Orange County Assemblyman Richard Robinson will not become a candidate to succeed Cypress Democrat Paul Carpenter, who has vacated the 33rd District seat in the state Senate. It had been widely speculated that Robinson, a Democrat, might run, particularly after he moved his legal residence to an address in the 33rd District last fall.
But Robinson said recently that he is seeking appointment as the state’s first monitor of lawyer discipline, a newly created post that falls under Atty. Gen. John Van de Kamp. A spokesman for Van de Kamp said that Robinson is one of several candidates for the job, which will investigate public complaints against lawyers.
Robinson was defeated in his bid to unseat incumbent Rep. Robert Dornan (R-Garden Grove) in last November’s election.
If Robinson had opted to run for Carpenter’s seat, he would have entered an already crowded field of seven candidates, including four Democrats. Gov. George Deukmejian has set the special election for May 12. A primary will be held March 17.
