A 22-year-old man who allegedly tried to rob a jewelry store owner in downtown San Diego Wednesday night was in fair condition Thursday after the owner shot her alleged attacker in the thigh and fired at his accomplice, who escaped.

Police said Jimmy Satcher of San Diego was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery after he and another man allegedly assaulted Juverina Mae Shutters in a parking lot near her store.

The two men also allegedly tried to take Shutters’ purse--which contained about $15,000 worth of jewelry--in the parking lot at 700 E St.

Shutters, 52, owner of a jewelry store in the 800 block of 6th Avenue, told police she was about to get into her car when the two men asked her for the keys. When she refused, they tried to take her purse and she opened fire, Lt. Ray Dobbs said.

Satcher later sought treatment at a nearby alcohol and drug abuse treatment center, where the center’s personnel called police. The other man escaped, Dobbs said.

Shutters had a permit for the gun, Dobbs said.
