A 300-foot stretch of water in Pacific Beach is closed at least through noon today after several hundred gallons of sewage spilled into the ocean early Thursday morning.

Grease in the sewers was blamed for the sewage overflow from a manhole cover in the 4400 block of Mission Boulevard. The polluted water ran into a storm drain at Grand Avenue and Mission Boulevard about 12:15 a.m., County Public Health Services spokeswoman Cheri Eir said.

The overflow was stopped about 2 a.m., but not before 525 gallons of sewage had spilled into coastal waters. Signs were posted to close beaches for 150 feet on either side of the storm drain outlet at the foot of Grand Avenue.
