An Anaheim man was critically injured Sunday during a three-car accident on the Artesia Freeway that apparently was triggered by a driver who swerved to avoid tire remnants, authorities said.

Steven Scott Hall, 27, suffered extensive head trauma and was rushed to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana after the 12:06 p.m. crash, the California Highway Patrol reported. A hospital spokeswoman said Hall was in critical condition Sunday night. Hall was the only person injured in the collision, CHP officials said.

According to the CHP, Anthony Trent Oglesby, 23, of Orange was traveling west on the freeway at about 70 miles per hour when he swerved to avoid a piece of tire tread in his path. Oglesby’s car struck a car driven by Goldie M. Honey, 61, of Utah. Her husband, George A. Honey, 69, was a passenger in the car.

CHP officers said the impact sent Honey’s car spinning out of control and into the center divider facing the opposite direction. Oglesby’s car, meanwhile, bounced off the Honeys’ vehicle, spun out of control and struck Hall’s vehicle.

They said Hall’s car then crashed into the center divider and began to roll. Hall was ejected from his vehicle and landed in the nearest freeway lane to the divider. His car continued on across all freeway lanes, coming to rest at the right shoulder.
