A 25-year-old man was in fair condition Monday after being shot in the chest Sunday night while a passenger in a car.
Emile Fields was riding in a car, which halted for a stop sign in the Encanto area about 9:50 p.m. Fields began yelling at a woman who was walking nearby when a man with a rifle suddenly appeared and opened fire, Lt. Connie Van Putten said. A bullet went through the car door and hit Fields in the chest. The driver of the car took Fields to a nearby market and called police. A Life Flight helicopter took Fields to Mercy Hospital, Van Putten said.
Police made a search of the 600 block of Sunnyside Avenue for a white male, between 20 to 25 years old, but found no suspects.
