NHL Roundup : Montreal Beats Chicago, Regains Norris Lead, 3-2

Chris Chelios scored on a 30-foot slapshot at 12:06 of the third period Monday night in Chicago to lift the Montreal Canadiens to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks and back into first place in the Norris Division.

The Canadiens moved one point ahead of Hartford and remained two in front of Boston.

The Blackhawks lost starting goalie Murray Bannerman, who was struck by a shot above the right eye, and center Steve Ludzik, who may have a broken collarbone.

Chicago took a 2-0 lead on goals by Darryl Sutter and Steve Larmer, but Montreal tied the score on goals 31 seconds apart by Guy Carbonneau and Claude Lemieux in the second period.

Boston 6, Buffalo 2--Steve Kasper and Cam Neely each scored two goals, and the Bruins beat the Sabres at Boston for their sixth straight victory.

Boston’s Bob Sweeney, a former Boston College star appearing in his second NHL game, ignited a three-goal flurry that broke a scoreless tie in the second period.

Bruin rookie goalie Bill Ranford suffered a concussion and a forehead gash when he was hit in the face mask by a shot. He was replaced by Cleon Daskalakis at 3:09 of the second period.

Calgary 6, Toronto 5--The Flames rallied from a five-goal deficit in the final period and defeated the Maple Leafs at Toronto on Colin Patterson’s goal at 1:30 of overtime.

Joey Mullen’s second goal of the period tied the game with 49 seconds left in regulation.

Wendell Clark scored twice for Toronto in a five-goal first period.

N.Y. Rangers 6, New Jersey 3--Walt Poddubny and Kelly Kisio scored 16 seconds apart in the second period, and the Rangers stopped the Devils at New York.
