The City of Glendale on Tuesday became the California headquarters of the bicentennial commemoration of the U.S. Constitution.

At the request of state officials, the Glendale City Council allocated $50,000 in taxpayer subsidies to a nonprofit bicentennial foundation that will coordinate a series of celebrations throughout the state for the next four years.

The Glendale office of the California Bicentennial Foundation for the U.S. Constitution will work under the direction of the national bicentennial commission established by the U.S. Congress and headed by former U.S. Chief Justice Warren E. Burger.

Cities, school districts, business organizations and other civic groups throughout the state and nation are expected to sponsor programs commemorating the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution in Philadelphia on Sept. 17, 1787. The celebration will continue through the 1991 bicentennial of the adoption of the Bill of Rights.

Glendale was selected to serve as the state’s model bicentennial city at the recommendation of Raymond D. Edwards, a trustee of the state bicentennial foundation and chairman of Glendale Federal Savings, which is headquartered in Glendale.

Offices are being provided in a new office building at 520 N. Central Ave., Suite 760. The office developer, Donald Platz, was named to head Glendale’s bicentennial committee.
