Search for U.S. Jet in Mediterranean Ends
The U.S. Navy has called off a search for the crew of an EA-3B Skywarrior jet that crashed in the Mediterranean, and all seven crew members are presumed dead, a Navy spokesman said Wednesday.
“They are listed as lost at sea and presumed dead,” Lt. Dave Morris said. He said the search was called off late Tuesday.
The jet crashed Sunday night in the central Mediterranean while trying to land on the aircraft carrier Nimitz after a routine flight, Morris said.
No other details were available on the crash.
The pilot was identified by the Navy as Lt. Alan A. Levine, 26, of Syosset, N.Y. The others were Lt. Cmdr. Ronald R. Callander, 37, of Minneapolis; Lt. Stephen H. Batchelder, 30, of Plymouth, N.H.; Lt. James D. Richards, 27, of Utica, Mich.; 2nd Class Petty Officer Richard A. Herzing, 22, of Saint Marys, Pa.; 3rd Class Petty Officer Patrick R. Price, 28, of Mobile, Ala., and 3rd Class Petty Officer Craig R. Rudolf, 20, of Milwaukee.
