Suit Against Meese’s Commission on Pornography Reported Settled

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department announced Thursday that it has settled one of the lawsuits against Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III’s Commission on Pornography involving a letter sent to convenience store chains, many of which subsequently stopped carrying adult magazines.
Under the settlement with the Magazine Publishers Assn., a distributors group, the government provided assurances that no blacklist of allegedly pornographic magazines will be published as a result of the commission’s activities.
Out of Business
The panel went out of business last summer and its final report was issued in July.
Despite the settlement, Penthouse, Playboy and Playgirl magazines, which also sued the commission, are pursuing the case and are seeking unspecified damages for the loss of sales through 15,000 to 20,000 retail outlets.
The magazines and the association went to court last year after the pornography commission sent a letter saying it had received testimony characterizing Playboy and Penthouse as “porn” magazines.
