McCordic Takes 32-Pin Lead in L.A. Bowling Open
Pete McCordic took a 32-pin lead over Jess Stayrook Thursday night after the fourth round of the Professional Bowlers Assn.’s $125,000 Greater Los Angeles Open at the Gable House Bowl in Torrance.
McCordic, a 14-year veteran from Houston, won six of his eight match games and jumped from sixth place into the lead with a pinfall total of 6,156.
McCordic has earned more than $375,000 on the PBA Tour without winning a title. He has finished second six times.
Stayrook, of San Diego, closed his fourth round with games of 299, 267 and 240 for an 806 series and a 6,124 total.
Ricky Corona of Diamond Bar dropped a spot to third place with 6,118, while two-time champion Warren Nelson of Fresno vaulted from 20th place to fourth with 6,075.
Defending champion Del Warren of Lake Worth, Fla., was fifth at 6,071.
Marc McDowell of Madison, Wis., the third-round leader, dropped to 20th place at 5,796.
The top 24 bowlers are scheduled to complete their match play with two more rounds tonight before the top five qualify for the nationally televised finals Saturday afternoon.
