John Elway, making his first appearance in the National Football League’s all-star game, gets another shot at the heart of the New York Giant defense today in the Pro Bowl.

Elway, good but not good enough in the Denver Broncos’ 39-20 Super Bowl loss to the Giants a week ago, will be the starting quarterback for the AFC all-stars.

The NFC defense includes Giant linebackers Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson, plus New York nose tackle Jim Burt and end Leonard Marshall.

The Giants had eight players, most of any team, voted into the Pro Bowl in the balloting by the league’s players.

Also representing New York will be running back Joe Morris, tight end Mark Bavaro, tackle Brad Benson and punter Sean Landeta.

Elway is starting in place of Miami’s Dan Marino, who earned the most votes at quarterback. Marino can’t play because of a knee injury.
