Defending champion Corey Pavin finished off a 65 with a birdie on the last hole and took a one-stroke lead Thursday after the first round of the $600,000 Hawaiian Open golf tournament.

“Obviously, it’s very nice to get off to a start like this,” Pavin said after his seven-under-par effort on the windblown Waialae Country Club course at Honolulu.

Pavin, who won the Bob Hope Classic three weeks ago and leads the PGA Tour in money earned for the season, had a birdie on the 18th hole to break out of a three-way tie with Jack Renner and Mac O’Grady, who both shot 66s.

Tom Watson had a five-under-par 67 that left him two strokes back.

At Sarasota, Fla., Chris Johnson shot a five-under-par 67 in the first round of a $200,000 LPGA tournament to take a one-stroke lead.

The start was delayed an hour by heavy rain, and six players were left on the Bent Tree Country Club course when play was halted by darkness. Both threesomes had one more hole to play, but none of the six was in a position to take the lead.

At 68 was Cathy Morse. Another shot back was Patti Rizzo.

Pat Bradley was at even-par 72, while Nancy Lopez was at one-over 73.
