San Diego, Imperial Counties Jolted by Quake Near Mexicali
An earthquake centered 10 miles southeast of Mexicali, Mexico, and measuring approximately 5.5 on the Richter scale rocked San Diego and Imperial counties Friday evening but caused no damage, authorities reported.
Robert Finn, a spokesman for Caltech in Pasadena, said the quake occurred at 7:45 p.m. and was felt throughout the San Diego region. Finn said callers indicated the earthquake was felt as far east as Yuma, Ariz.
Daniel Saenz, a police dispatcher in Calexico, the U.S. border town adjacent to Mexicali, reported that “the whole Police Department was shaking. You could just see the walls shaking and afterwards you could feel the ground swaying back and forth.”
Nevertheless, Saenz said there were “no major injuries or any structural damage at all” in Calexico.
Mexicali fire officials reported no injuries or damage from the quake.
