Padres Plan to Make New Offer to Free-Agent Outfielder Tim Raines
Ballard Smith, the Padre president, reopened negotiations with free-agent outfielder Tim Raines Thursday and says he will make a new offer to Raines Monday.
In January, Smith offered Raines a two-year, $2.2-million contract. But Raines’ agent, Tom Reich, didn’t like the deal. Smith suggested that Raines--who made $1.5 million with Montreal in 1986--test the market.
Reich then talked briefly with Atlanta, but the Braves never made an offer.
Later, Padre right fielder Tony Gwynn spoke with Raines on the telephone and found out that he still wanted to play in San Diego. Gwynn called Smith to tell him so.
Smith then phoned Reich last week, but Reich was out of the office. Reich finally called Smith back, but Smith was out.
They finally spoke Thursday.
“We’re definitely interested,” Smith said.
Reich was unavailable for comment Thursday night.
