MODUGNO’S ‘VOLARE’ WAS FIRST TOP RECORD IN 1958

Italian crooner Domenico Modugno won the Grammy’s first record of the year in 1958 for “Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare)”--his only award in that category (and his only U.S. hit). But several other artists went on to to become double winners of the Record of the Year award. They include: Henry Mancini, 5th Dimension, Simon & Garfunkel and Roberta Flack.
