The executive director of a nonprofit San Rafael health research foundation was named by Gov. George Deukmejian to be chairman of the highly publicized California Task Force to Promote Self-Esteem and Personal and Social Responsibility. Andrew Mecca, 40, a Democrat, said he thinks the lampooning of the task force by cartoonist Garry Trudeau in the “Doonesbury” cartoon strip has been “good satire” that has given the idea initial visibility and has made people ask what California is doing. The aim of the task force is to compile research showing how major social problems can be reduced by raising the self-esteem of people.
