TOYS ‘R STEVEN

Tooooo cute for words! And typically Steven Spielberg, which means real heartwarming--and perfect for merchandising spinoffs. That’s what we found in the script for “Batteries Not Included,” the typically secret Spielberg pic (he exec produces) that Universal plans to have out this summer.

A blend of things “E.T.” and “Cocoon,” it’s all about these little flying-saucerish aliens who miraculously restore a once-glorious NYC tenement building--and some broken lives--about to feel the wrecking ball (dotty Jessica Tandy and her loving hubby Hume Cronyn are among the oldsters).

Of course, the tenants are at first awfully suspicious of the critters. They’re asked, “Are you toys? . . . Are you something Japanese?”

As it turns out, one visitor is a He, the other a She . . . and after a little loveplay, there are three more of ‘em--of the itsy-bitsy variety. But (sob!) one just lies there. . . . Well, we don’t want to give everything away. But prepare to meet an adorable little saucer named Weems.

Directed by Matthew Robbins (also among four scripters), “Batteries Not Included” has lonely residents forming new friendships, falling in love, worrying that their life-enhancing visitors might fly off--and conflict from a developer who pulls out all stops trying to knock down the nesting place.

And, naturally, there’s plenty of high anxiety as the little ones get lost in the crowded skies above NYC.
