NBA Roundup : Wilkins, Willis Lead Hawks Past the Bullets, 121-99

Thirty-three points from Dominique Wilkins and 26 points and 17 rebounds from Kevin Willis helped the Atlanta Hawks win their third game in a row, a 121-99 victory over the Washington Bullets Monday night at Atlanta.

The Hawks pulled away in the third quarter after breaking a 56-56 halftime tie.

The victory enabled second-place Atlanta to climb within 1 1/2 games of idle Detroit in the Central Division. Washington slipped back to third place in the Eastern Division, one-half game behind the Philadelphia 76ers and 11 1/2 behind the Boston Celtics.

Tree Rollins, who missed Atlanta’s last two games with a foot injury, blocked seven shots, while Washington’s 7-foot 6-inch Manute Bol blocked six.

Dallas 135, Phoenix 112--Rolando Blackman scored 25 points to lead the Mavericks to an easy victory at Dallas.

The Mavericks, who were coming off their second-worst defeat of the season--a 123-98 loss at San Antonio on Saturday night--never trailed against the Suns and led by 33 points late in the third quarter.

The victory was Dallas’ fifth straight at home, where it is 25-5, and moved the Mavericks five games ahead of the second-place Utah Jazz in the Midwest Division. Phoenix lost its seventh consecutive game and second under interim Coach Dick Van Arsdale, who replaced the fired John MacLeod last Thursday.

James Donaldson had 22 points and Mark Aguirre 21 for Dallas, and Donaldson had a game-high 11 rebounds.

Larry Nance led the Suns with 25 points and Walter Davis had 17.

Houston 105, San Antonio 100--Akeem Olajuwon scored 32 points at San Antonio as the Houston Rockets beat the Spurs for the fifth time in as many meetings this season.

Robert Reid finished with 21 points. Alvin Robertson led San Antonio with 26, and Mitchell added 20.

Sacramento 117, Denver 114--Veteran forward Mark Olberding hit all 13 of his free throws and scored a season-high 21 points as the Kings concluded an eight-game trip with a win at Denver.

The Kings got 24 points each from Eddie Johnson and Otis Thorpe, who also had 15 rebounds, and 23 points from Reggie Theus in handing the Nuggets their 10th loss in the last 12 games. Sacramento is still last in the Midwest Division but only 1 1/2 games behind San Antonio.

The Nuggets’ last chance came in the closing seconds when Lafayette Lever, who had his 13th triple-double of the season, missed a three-point try. Lever had 15 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists.

Darrell Walker sparked Denver off the bench with 20 points, and Alex English had 26.

Seattle 123, Cleveland 107--Tom Chambers scored 36 points, and Maurice Lucas came off the bench to contribute 18 as the SuperSonics downed the Cavaliers at Seattle.
