Share

A driver of a school bus with 55 junior high school students aboard apparently forgot to set his parking brake, sending the bus rolling backward, pushing a car over an embankment and pinning a man between a truck and a car, the California Highway Patrol reported Tuesday.

Officers said no one was seriously injured in the mishap, which occurred in the parking lot of Marco F. Forster Junior High School at about 3:10 p.m. Monday.

One of the bus passengers--Marie Ann Halas, 11, a sixth-grader--complained of back, head and knee pain and was taken to San Clemente General Hospital, where she was treated and released, officers said.

J. Kelly Ware, 34, of Dana Point, who officers said was pinned briefly between his truck and a car, was not injured.

Officers said the bus began rolling when its driver, Fred W. Cable, 61, of San Clemente, got up to adjust his seat.
