Share

A slow-moving Southern Pacific freight train derailed near the Santa Ana Freeway in Anaheim, causing moderate damage to the street and several vehicles but no injuries, police said. Anaheim Police Lt. Jack Parra said the train was going about 5 m.p.h. near Santa Ana and Harbor boulevards when a boxcar jumped the track at 9:30 p.m. “The boxcar was pulled approximately half a mile through the middle of Santa Ana Boulevard . . . before it got to the overpass of the freeway, where it jumped the track completely,” Parra said. The boxcar then struck the overpass abutment, sending pieces of the concrete and metal guardrail showering onto four cars traveling northbound on the freeway, he said. Police and highway officials reported no injuries. Parra said Southern Pacific expected to get the train back on the track within several hours.
