Detectives are investigating an explosion and fire Tuesday that burned a 27-year-old worker in a Canoga Park auto body shop, Los Angeles police said.

A “flash grenade,” which gives off heat and light, exploded in a car as Osmin Aguinada, 27, of Sun Valley was repairing the vehicle, Lt. Don Beasley said.

The blast ignited a can of lacquer thinner that had been placed near where Aguinada was standing in the body shop at 20934 Sherman Way, he said. Aguinada was hospitalized with burns, Beasley said, but the severity of his injuries and the name of hospital that treated him were not disclosed.

No other grenades or weapons were found inside the car, and detectives were trying to learn how the flash grenade got there, Beasley said.
