Santa Ana : Caltrans to Open Local Office, But Won’t Stay
- Share via
The California Department of Transportation is scheduled to open an Orange County office Monday, but county officials are disappointed that it will be around only long enough to handle the Santa Ana Freeway widening project.
The office will occupy space in a building Caltrans owns at 610 East 17th St., which it uses for maintenance personnel.
The county Transportation Commission has been seeking a full-scale Caltrans district office for two years, arguing that the county’s highway projects are not being given the priority status they deserve by the Caltrans district office in Los Angeles.
Only about a dozen Caltrans personnel will staff the temporary Orange County facility, according to Tom Fortune, spokesman for the county Transportation Commission.
Caltrans has argued that it cannot afford to finance a full-time Orange County staff and build or rent a larger office.
