“MEANS AND ENDS”

U.S.A., 1987, 5:30 p.m. The weighty question pondered in this film about making movies is: Do the ends justify the means? The answer here is a resounding no . Nonetheless, there’s great promise in this yarn about three young movie makers invading a small, economically depressed Illinois town. They tell the local elders they’re making an old-fashioned social comedy when, in fact, the film is nothing more than an inane teen-age romp. A funny concept bogged down in its artistic angst.
