Harry Silbert, who booked mounts for Bill Shoemaker from the time racing’s winningest jockey began his career in 1949, died Tuesday night at Cedars Sinai Medical Center after a 1 1/2-year struggle with cancer.
Silbert, a native New Yorker, would have been 76 on Saturday. He was still finding horses for Shoemaker to ride last December at Hollywood Park, before his condition worsened.
Silbert is survived by his wife, Thelma, daughters Rita Robbins and Marlene Mendelsohn; and a son, Stan. All live in the Los Angeles area. There are also seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A service and burial will be at Hillside Memorial Park in West Los Angeles on Friday, at a time still to be announced.
