College Roundup : Fullerton Gymnasts Set School Mark of 287 Points

The Cal State Fullerton men’s gymnastics team set a school record of 287.0 points Wednesday night to defeat San Jose State (263.70) in a double-dual meet in Titan Gym. The Fullerton women’s team lost to Arizona State, 180.40-168.80.

The men’s mark also was a national high this season, breaking UCLA’s top score of 284 set in February. The previous school record was 284.10, set on Feb. 22, 1985, in the Titan Invitational.

Third-ranked Fullerton was led by freshman Bill Barham, who scored 58.15 points to win the all-around competition, and Eli Rodriguez, who was second in the all-around with 56.70 points. Barham scored 9.85 on the high bar and 9.8 on the pommel horse, and Rodriguez had a 9.75 mark on the pommel horse.

Lee Xiao Ping scored a 9.9 on the pommel horse, 9.85 on the rings and 9.75 on the parallel bars. The Titans will meet top-ranked UCLA at Pauley Pavilion Saturday.

In the women’s meet, Fullerton’s Callie Glanton scored 36.55 to win the all-around.

In baseball action:

Cal State Fullerton 11, Chapman 5--Left fielder Greg Mannion had two triples, two RBIs and scored three runs to help the Titans at Fullerton.

Center fielder Mark Baca also had two hits and two RBIs for Fullerton, which improved to 14-9 and has won 13 of its last 17 games. Larry Casian struck out eight in three innings of relief to gain the win for the Titans.

Shortstop Jeff Kidwiler went 3 for 4 with two doubles for the Panthers (7-10).

Loyola Marymount 19, UC Irvine 4--Mark Grafetti had four hits, including a grand slam, six RBIs and scored four runs to lead the Lions at UCI.

Travis Tarchione had three hits, six RBIs and scored two runs, and Don Sparks added three hits, an RBI and four runs for Loyola (17-7). The Anteaters dropped to 12-13-1.

In softball action:

Cal State Fullerton 9-4, Cal State Dominguez Hills 0-0--Janis Okerlund pitched a three-hitter in the first game, and Chris Gage threw a one-hitter in the second to lead the top-ranked Titans (15-2) to the nonconference sweep at Fullerton.

In women’s tennis action:

South Carolina 7, UC Irvine 2--South Carolina, ranked 23rd in the nation, improved to 12-4 with the nonconference victory at Irvine.
