A major road in Yosemite National Park may be blocked for weeks with more than 1 million tons of slide debris because the area is too dangerous for cleanup crews and a storm is on the way, officials said. “We’ve had several rocks fall this morning and we really expect more, especially with the rains that are predicted for the weekend,” park spokeswoman Lisa Dapprich said. “There are still a few small rocks falling and the area is still quite unstable. The U.S. Geological Survey inspected the slide area and recommended the entire area be monitored for several weeks. . . .” The largest of several slides dropped tons of debris across the main road out of the valley, about a quarter of a mile west of Yosemite Village. Yosemite Valley was accessible to park visitors but motorists had to rely on Southside Drive, which was temporarily converted to two-way traffic.
