AIDS, and ways to slow the spread of the deadly disease, dominated discussion at the California Medical Assn.’s annual meeting last week at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.
The state’s health department director, Dr. Kenneth Kizer, said on Sunday that he had not heard “any convincing argument” for mandatory AIDS testing. But, he said, private physicians “need to substantially expand voluntary testing” among their patients.
The following day, the CMA’s 441 policy-making delegates voted to work for new laws that would let doctors notify sexual partners of people who test positive for the AIDS virus that they may be at risk. They also voted to urge state lawmakers to allow physicians to notify other doctors on a confidential basis if a patient they all are caring for tests positive for the virus.
